Sometimes a kitchen has plenty of square footage but still doesn’t feel like it is living up to its potential.
That was the case with this Raleigh, NC kitchen. The existing space featured dark cabinetry, traditional granite countertops, a beige tile backsplash and a large island. While the footprint provided a great starting point, the overall design felt heavy and dated, and some of the kitchen’s most interesting spaces—especially the separate butler’s pantry area—were ready for a completely new personality.
The goal of this Raleigh kitchen remodel was not simply to make the room lighter. We wanted to create a kitchen that felt modern, sophisticated and highly customized, while still being warm enough for everyday living.
The finished design combines Dove and Charcoal cabinetry, Valor Gold quartz countertops and backsplash, a large statement island, striking pendant lighting and a one-of-a-kind bar area featuring black marble tile, Leathered Black Pearl granite and LED-lit live-edge floating shelves.
The result is a kitchen that feels completely different from the space we started with.
BEFORE: A Large Kitchen That Felt Dark and Heavy
There were several advantages to the original kitchen, including generous cabinetry, a large center island and a separate beverage and bar area.

But visually, nearly every major surface was dark.
Dark cabinetry surrounded the room and continued onto the island and bar. The brown and gold tones in the existing granite countertops, combined with the beige backsplash and darker hardwood flooring, created a kitchen that felt much heavier than its actual size.
The cabinetry also stopped short in several areas, which broke up the vertical lines of the room and made the ceiling feel lower.
Rather than simply replacing one finish at a time, we approached this remodel as a complete design.
Creating Contrast With Dove and Charcoal Cabinets
One of the biggest changes was moving away from a kitchen composed almost entirely of dark cabinetry.

For the new design, we used a combination of Dove and Charcoal cabinets from J&K Cabinetry of Raleigh.
The Dove upper cabinetry brings brightness into the room and visually lifts the kitchen, while the Charcoal base cabinets provide depth and contrast. Instead of choosing an all-white kitchen, the two-tone palette gives the space more personality and creates a strong architectural look.
The charcoal cabinetry also connects beautifully with several other dark elements throughout the kitchen, including the island, appliance wall and custom bar.
Gold-toned cabinet hardware adds warmth and keeps the black-and-white palette from feeling stark.
Valor Gold Quartz Countertops—and Backsplash
One of our favorite elements of this Raleigh kitchen remodel is the use of Valor Gold quartz from Daltile and Stone.
The quartz was installed not only on the countertops but also vertically as the kitchen backsplash. Using the same material on both surfaces creates a clean, uninterrupted appearance and allows the subtle veining in the quartz to become part of the overall design.
It also eliminates the visual breaks created by a traditional tile backsplash.
Against the darker Charcoal cabinetry, the light Valor Gold quartz provides dramatic contrast. Paired with Dove cabinets, it creates a softer, more seamless effect. That combination allowed us to use the same material throughout the kitchen while getting two very different visual results.
A Large Island Designed to Be the Center of the Kitchen
The island was already a major feature of the original room, so we wanted the remodeled version to feel intentional rather than simply large.
The new island provides generous workspace, storage and seating while grounding the open kitchen. A light Valor Gold quartz countertop contrasts with the dark cabinetry below, carrying the kitchen’s two-tone design into the center of the room.
Because the island sits in such a prominent location, lighting became especially important.
Statement Island Lighting as a Focal Point

Instead of using several small traditional pendant lights, the homeowner chose a sculptural statement fixture over the island.
The organic shape immediately draws the eye and adds a contemporary element to the room without competing with the cabinetry or countertops. Lighting is often treated as a finishing detail in a kitchen remodel, but it can completely change the personality of a space. Here, the island pendant functions almost like artwork.
Combined with recessed lighting and under-cabinet LED lighting, it also gives the kitchen multiple layers of illumination for cooking, entertaining and everyday use.
Turning the Bar Area Into Something Completely Custom

The bar may be the smallest area of this kitchen remodel—but it is arguably the most distinctive.
The original bar featured the same dark cabinetry, granite countertops and beige backsplash used throughout the old kitchen.
We gave it an entirely different identity.
The remodeled bar features Charcoal cabinetry, gold hardware, Black Pearl Leathered countertop and a black marble backsplash tile with gold accents from Mosaic Tile, Raleigh.
But the real focal point is the shelving.
LED Live-Edge Floating Shelves
Rather than installing conventional floating shelves, we incorporated custom live-edge wood shelving with integrated LED lighting.
The organic edges and natural character of the wood introduce warmth against the black backsplash, while concealed LED lighting highlights both the shelves and the tile behind them. They also create a connection with the island light fixture by having organic elements in all areas.
The contrast is dramatic:
Natural wood. Black marble. Gold accents. Integrated lighting.
Together, they turn what could have been a secondary beverage station into a feature wall.
It is also a great example of how a remodeling project can include a few highly personal details without making the entire room feel overly trendy.
Mixing Materials Without Making the Kitchen Feel Busy
This kitchen contains several distinct finishes:
- Dove cabinetry
- Charcoal cabinetry
- Valor Gold quartz
- Gold hardware
- Black marble backsplash tile
- Live-edge natural wood
- Stainless appliances
- Black accents
- Warm wood flooring
That sounds like a lot.
The reason it works is that the finishes repeat.
Charcoal appears throughout the kitchen and bar. Gold repeats in the cabinet hardware and bar tile. Warm wood connects the flooring and live-edge shelving. Light quartz ties the countertops and backsplash together.
When materials are repeated intentionally, a kitchen can have considerably more character without feeling disconnected.
A Raleigh Kitchen Remodel Designed Around the Homeowner
Perhaps the biggest difference between the before and after photos is not one individual material.
It is how the room feels.
The original kitchen was functional but visually heavy. The remodeled kitchen feels brighter and more open while actually having more visual interest than before.
That balance is something we strive for at Affordable Remodeling Solutions.
A kitchen does not have to follow one prescribed style. It should reflect the home, the people who live there and the way they actually use the space.
Sometimes that means a timeless white kitchen.
Sometimes it means Charcoal cabinets, gold hardware, dramatic quartz and a black marble bar with illuminated live-edge shelving.
And sometimes the best kitchen is a little bit of both.

Frequently Asked Questions About Kitchen Remodeling in Raleigh
Are two-tone kitchen cabinets still a good design choice?
Yes. Using two complementary cabinet colors can add depth and help visually define different areas of a kitchen. In this project, Dove upper cabinets brighten the room while Charcoal lower cabinetry provides contrast and anchors the design.
Can quartz be used as a kitchen backsplash?
Yes. Extending quartz from the countertop up the wall creates a continuous appearance with fewer visual breaks than traditional tile. In this kitchen, Valor Gold quartz was used for both countertops and backsplash.
Can LED lighting be incorporated into floating shelves?
Yes. LED lighting can be concealed within or beneath floating shelving to provide accent lighting. For this Raleigh remodel, integrated LEDs were incorporated into custom live-edge shelves in the bar area.
What makes a kitchen remodel feel custom?
Custom details do not have to be everywhere. Features such as specialty cabinetry, full-height quartz backsplashes, statement lighting, unique tile and purpose-built elements like the LED live-edge bar shelving can give a kitchen a highly personalized look.
